Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms out there! Our world would not be the same without the strong and beautiful mothers that dedicate their lives to their children and families. Yesterday we held our 5th workshop at the New York Asian Women’s Center, and were delighted to celebrate motherhood with the survivors as they dedicated the day to throwing a baby shower for a “Mom to Be”.
In the past few weeks, we have been learning the basics of brainstorming, design, and sewing. Last week the survivors began practicing sewing skills by utilizing sewing machines and hand sewing techniques to create little pin cushions. We continued to finish these pin cushions yesterday, and then dedicated the second half of the workshop to individualized projects. The creativity in the room was inspiring.
One survivor in particular decided to skip working on her project yesterday to design a present for her 8.5 month pregnant friend, who was not feeling well enough to join the workshop. She created a one-of-a-kind “Mom to Be” sash, with help from our volunteers and the fellow designers. As we grew closer to the end of the workshop, the survivors joined hands to finish the sash in time for the baby shower. The collaboration, dedication, and motivation the survivors shared for this special mother was moving. The survivors have begun to develop a special bond, and they are now using art & design to communicate and express their feelings.
We are looking forward to the upcoming weeks as the survivors continue to develop their designs using your donated materials. Stay tuned for more soon!
