This Sexual Assault Awareness Month, We're Breaking the COVID-19 Isolation of Survivors Through

Nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States have been raped in their lifetime. And the numbers continue to rise. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC) estimates that 734,630 people were raped (threatened, attempted, or completed) in the U.S. in 2018 (the latest date that survey statistics are available).

Despite the increase in self-reports of rape and sexual assault, there was a decrease in reporting to police from 2017 to 2018.

Social isolation due to COVID-19 however has exacerbated the threat. Mandatory lockdowns have trapped domestic abuse victims in their homes with their abusers, isolated from the people and the resources that could help them, according to Time magazine.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office says there’s been a 15-20% increase in reports of domestic violence statewide these last few weeks.

RISE UP 19 is working towards creating a "Survivor Safe Haven" throughout the country to help survivors get the support they need. Learn more about this initiative from Amanda Nguyen, on the Trevor Noah show:

We are continuing to provide a creative and supportive outlet for survivors through New York. Since the lockdown, htE has moved its programs online, adjusting our spring 12-week curriculum to meet the needs of the participants during this stressful time.
